On Saturday, March 10th at 7pm, the Newark Library will open its doors transformed into a space vessel. All a part of the setting for the most recent murder mystery play set at the library.

The evening’s play, entitled The Celestial Slayer, will involve local celebrities sharing their theatrical talent while portraying members of the crew of the starship Biblioteca.

During the event, the participants, who will book passage on the space vessel by purchasing their boarding visa, will be introduced to the crew and key characters. Alas, one of them will meet an untimely death and we will ask everyone to help to solve the murder.

Throughout the event, refreshments will be served. After the final scenes when the murderer is uncovered, dessert will be shared in the community room.

Boarding Visas (also known as tickets) can be purchased at the library or from a library trustee. The proceeds of this event will support the library’s operating fund.

Happy Halloween! We want to let you know about some of our upcoming events.

Beginning Tuesday at 6:30pm, we will start our Explore Classic "Dr. Who" series. Join us each Tuesday in November when we will watch an episode for the early years of Doctor Who, the long-running British television series.

There will be no Family Thursday this week but next Thursday November 10th, we will be having a game night. Bring your family and your favorite board games.

The Friends of the Newark Library will be having a book review luncheon on Friday November 11th.

We have had a busy fall so far here at the Newark Library!

Our friend Booker B. Owwl came to visit us back in September! Booker went with Miss Morehouse and some helpers to the Perkins and Lincoln School open houses! Booker got to meet many students and he helped spread the word about how fantastic the library is!

We have also started our Family Thursdays program! So far we have had a very fun LEGO night and an exciting PJ Story time.

On Saturday May 14th, 2011 a group of teens from Newark went to Nazareth College in Rochester to be a part of the Rochester Teen Book Festival (TBF). This free one day event brings together teen readers and authors of popular teen books.

Middle school students had a chance to preview some of the books in our graphic novel collection. They spent an hour browsing and a few students wrote some quick reviews:

Chelsea DeHaven read Baby Mouse Heartbreaker, by Jennifer and Mathew Holm. It is about a mouse that wants a date to the Valentine’s Day Dance.
“I think you would enjoy reading it, too, because it’s really funny and really interesting.”

Faith read, Mutton Soup,” by James Proumis. It is about a bunch of ways to make mutton soup.
“It is a funny book and would be good for children ages eight through ten.”

The Beyond The Covers Book Club will be meeting again this month to discuss another thought-provoking book. Consider joining them this month as they review the best-selling book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloots. The book paints a picture of an extraordinary woman and her family as they are thrown into extraordinary circumstances.

A program for preschool children

ages 3 - 5, that will help prepare them for the challenges of kindergarten. From March 2nd to April 20th, kids will have the opportunity to learn more about letters, numbers, shapes, and colors through stories, crafts, and music.

Your Heart Burns for the Library!

The Newark Public Library will be holding its annual beer tasting and chili contest on Saturday, February 12th from 6 to 9 pm!

Do you feel that your favorite chili may just be award-winning? Then we invite you to prepare it and submit it for the contest. If you're just interested in tasting the beer and enjoying the chili, there's a spot for you in the fun as well! We'll also be having raffles, prizes, and music - provided by the one and only Andy Correia.

Tickets are $15 and can be obtained either at the library's front desk or from any library trustee. All proceeds from the tickets will go to benefit the library.

If you're submitting your chili for the contest, you can find the registration form here. Just print it, fill it out, and drop it off at the library and you'll be entered into the competition.

You're invited to join our Beyond the Covers book discussion group to read a few of them! The book group meets the third Monday of every month at 6:30 pm. Each month, the group reads a unique book and discusses its themes, characters, and nuances. For the location of this month's meeting, inquire at the front desk.

The next meeting is January 24th. The book for this month is Home by Marilynne Robinson. It is a moving novel about families, family secrets, and the passing of the generations. If you plan on joining the group this month, make sure to read the book in advance, so you'll be prepared to discuss it. Throughout the month of October, the Newark Public Library ran its Got Card? promotion in Kelley, Lincoln, and Perkins schools. It was an attempt to inspire children and their teachers to all sign up for library cards and check out books. Whichever class in each school checked out the most books would win a party hosted by the library!

The results are in for Kelley School, and we are happy to announce that Mrs. Eckert's 3rd Grade class won the contest!

Middle School Students have been listening to Boom! by Mark Haddon. The story involves spying, aliens and lots of action!

The students give the book a thumbs up.

Here are what some of them had to say:

"It was very funny!"

"It was cool because it has aliens."

"It has aliens and action. It's also a funny book, but it keeps you on the edge."

"I liked it when the alien made a restaurant table crack!"

"It's a good book because it's aliens and adventure."

"I recommend this story to people who like a story where kids are trying to fight something nobody else believes in."

We hosted a Halloween costume party yesterday here at the library! We had a great turnout, and all of the costumes were impressive. There was a princess, a bumblebee, a pumpkin, a football player, a UPS delivery man, and a pirate, just to name a few. Even Scooby-Doo himself showed up!

The New OWWL Has Arrived!

As many of you have probably noticed, the library catalog looks a bit different now than it used to. This is because all of the libraries in the Pioneer Library System have upgraded to a new software called Evergreen. Along with these changes came a brand new catalog.

We are interested in knowing your thoughts on the new catalog! As always, the thoughts of our community are of the utmost importance to us, and we would like you to share them with us. The Newark Public Library will be showing the last of its three films in the Environmental Film Festival this weekend. The Festival has been great so far, and this last event promises to be a good wrap-up.

This weekend's film is titled No Impact Man. It follows one man, Colin Beavan, along with his family, on their journey to live in the middle of New York City with
as little environmental impact as possible.

Library Transition

The Pioneer Library System is undergoing a change in its computer system. This is a good change, it will help in information organization and support a user friendly catalog interface. However, this means from October 4th - October 6th (during the upgrading process) the library will be limited in its services to the public. The only process the library will be able to complete (in consideration to computer system) is check-out materials that are here at the Newark library. We will not be able to place holds, renew materials, register new users, look up account information, etc.

If we cannot complete your request at this time we would first, like to apologize for the inconvenience and second, ask that you come in or call back starting Friday, October 8th when the library will be back online and ready to go. Please continue to come to the library during these three days. You will still be able to use the computers, read books, do research, check-out materials, ask questions and return your items. We are excited about this change and we ask for your patience during this transition.

In continuation of our Environmental Film Festival, we will be showing the second film in the line-up this weekend. We invite you to join us this Saturday, October 2nd, at 7 pm to view a sobering look at the effects of over-fishing in our oceans. The film is titled The End of the Line, a true call to action which compellingly makes the case that the earth's oceans must be preserved, like great areas of the land, for future generations.

As with every film in the series, the showing of The End of the Line will be followed by a time of interesting and thought-provoking discussion. We invite you not only to discuss the contents of the film, but also to share your opinions on the state of our environment.
The Environmental Film Festival is free to attend, and tickets will be handed out at the door. We have a limited amount of space, so admittance is on a first-come first-serve basis. We will also be serving refreshments free of charge.

We will be showing the first of three movies for our Environmental Film Festival this Saturday, September 25th, at 7 pm. The movie is titled Trashed, a provocative investigation of one of the fastest growing industries in North America: the garbage business. Trashed analyzes the causes and effects of the seemingly innocuous act of "taking out the garbage" while showcasing the individuals, activists, corporate and advocacy groups working to affect change and reform the current model.

This event is free of charge. All we ask is that you keep an open mind and express your opinions concerning the current state of our environment. There will be a discussion following the film which will be lead by a guest speaker.

Eco-friendly refreshments will be available and tickets will be given at the door on the day of the event. This is a first come first serve event so be sure to come early to get a seat.

Book Sale!

The Newark Public Library will be holding its annual fall book sale this weekend! We invite you to come take a peep through the books we'll have out ; who knows, you might just find a few good reads!

The dates are this Friday (September 17th), Saturday the 18th, and Monday the 20th.

We are also looking for volunteers to help us on Thursday (September 16th) with setting up tables and putting out the books. We'd appreciate any help we can get!

Check out our new Registration Calendar!

From now on, the library will be registering patrons with our new library events calendar. The calendar can be accessed by clicking the "Calendar" tab at the top of this page, or by clicking here!

From there, you can see all of the events that we have planned for the month. Not all programs and events require registration, those that do are underlined.

You can register yourself for programs by clicking on the event you want to attend and filling out the short form!

For the month of September...

*We will be having a Lego Night for our friends in Grades 2 and up on Thursday, September 9th at 7:00pm

*On Tuesday, September 14th we will be hosting a Travel Day program for our Pre-K friends, home school families, and students in grades 1-5 throughout the day

*Monday, September 27th is Family Bingo at 6:00pm

Use the events calendar to sign up for these fun programs, or feel free to call or stop by the library and we can register for you.

As you may have noticed...

We moved things around upstairs!

*The Information Desk is now conveniently located right as you come in from the Mason Street door. The computers have been shifted and rearranged.

*We have also created a new area especially for laptop users! This is just beyond the sit-down computer area.

*As you head back to the newspaper area, you will also notice some slight changes! We have rearranged the furniture to make room for an extra table for readers!

*Finally, the OWWL catalog computers are now located to the right of the new information desk, and can be seen immediately as you enter from High Street.

Come on down to the Children's Room everyone!

We've done some shifting and rearranging in the last few days!

The only major change is we moved the play table and the in-room toys and books (including the giant Legos) to the back left corner of the room. It is now stationed behind the Series section, in the middle of the Holiday section.

Also near the play station is our Parents and Educators section!

Magician David Moreland made a real SPLASH at our special end of the summer event on Friday, August 6th!!!

We had many guests, and he kept us all very entertained with tricks, and he even made some balloon animals! A great time was had by all!

Hello everyone! Just to let you know...

During the month of August, the Youth Department here at NPL is going to be busy shifting and updating. As a result, we won't be holding Story Time or Teen Time from the week of August 9th through the week of September 6th.

In the fall our programming kicks into high gear for the new school year! Programs will include Story Time, monthly Lego Nights, craft programs, and an updated Teen Time schedule.

To keep up to date on programs here at the library, continue to check this page as well as our Facebook page.

As always, continue to stop in the library to check out our collection of books, movies, and CD's!

And the winners are...

We held our Second Annual Pizza Taste Off during Teen Time on Friday, July 16th in order to determine which pizza place has the best crust, best sauce, best cheese, and which pizza is best overall.

Each teen got a piece of pizza from Wegmans, Marks, Pizza Hut, Pontillo's, Dominos, and BB's and rated the quality of the cheese, sauce, and crust.

We had a great turnout of about 12 teens from the community.

We would like to congratuate the winners...

Pontillo's... for having the best sauce

Wegmans... for having the best cheese

Dominos... for having the best crust

and we offer special congratulations to Pizza Hut for having the best overall pizza in the taste off!!!

Yesterday we had a Sidewalk Grafitti program for kids going in to grades K-5!

We provided sidewalk chalk for the kids to use on the walkways that lead up to the library! Look at some of our beautiful artwork!

Summer Reading Kick-Off Event!

For those who aren't aware- we held a tie dying event on Monday, June 28th that took place on the library's front lawn! There were 72 attendees!

Thank you to everyone who dropped by! Don't forget to come to the Tie-Dye Tie Up program on Wednesday, July 7th! Bring your shirt back and decorate it with our fabric paint and fabric markers!

To register for the reading program click on the reading computer in the right sidebar and create an account.
